Nikolaustag Celebration

Watson Lake Inn Stollen

On the night of December 5 and 6, in communities in Austria and Germany, a man dressed as der Heilige Nikolaus (St. Nicholas goes from house to house to bring small gifts to the children.

Is Nikolaus the same as Santa Claus?

Though they have similar outfits, Nikolaus is not to be confused with Santa Claus, who Germans call the Weihnachtsmann, or Father Christmas. They are two different people. In fact, many religious families try to focus more on Nikolaus earlier in December to ensure that Christmas is actually about Jesus’ birth, and not presents from an Americanized and commercialized Santa.

Companions Saint Nicholas Travels With

The scariest of all of St Nicholas’s companions… and the one making the biggest popularity surge world-wide, is Krampus. In Central European folklore, Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure described as “half-goat, half-demon”, who, during the Christmas season, punishes children who have misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards the well-behaved with gifts.

Advent and German Christmas Traditions

The traditional Christmas meal features duck, goose, rabbit or a roast, accompanied by stuffing, red cabbage and potato dumplings. Dessert typically includes Christmas Stollen; And at Watson Lake Inn we bake our own.  This tasty version bursts with nuts and fruit. Stollen can be found at many US supermarkets.
